Chapter 27

Chains

I stared past the cracks in the mirror and into Chad’s eyes as they glowed with fury.

“If we were not recruiting for a war, I would’ve pulverised him for his actions,” Chad snarled. “To even request placing a chain around you is an outrage, and then to speak to you like that!” he said, scrunching up his face in disbelief. “What a pompous bastard.”

Oh, the irony of a king calling anyone pompous.

Chad pointed his index finger upwards, wagging it in between us to mark that he had just realised something. “Eyeron is taking advantage of my lack of experience and our need for them to fight, all so he can spew out his own prejudices against vampires,” he went on, before absentmindedly flicking his wrist again to repair the mirror. “That’s what he’s doing. Either that or the elves are the Casters feeding information to Florence.”

The words burst through his clenched teeth as he started to pace back and forth across the carpet, tracing the same trail I had tracked only a few weeks earlier. His heart pummelled against his rib cage like a rampant animal fighting its way out. Infuriated hands roved through his hair, ruffling it the way he always did as though it would force his brain to come up with a reasonable solution. I looked at his hands, wishing they were my hands running through his soft, dark hair, magic flowing freely through them so I could erase all his worries. Only, I didn’t trust my hands. My emotions were too strong to channel my purple rays into anything positive.

“We’ll be careful,” I said gently, feeling in my heart that the traitor was not King Eyeron, but Lili. Truth be told, however, I was too far lost in my own thoughts to understand the ramifications if I was wrong.

As I thought about all the elven king had said, fear wrapped its impenetrable rope around me until I forced it deep down, detaching myself completely from the present, the future, and the things that weighed me down.

Fantasies of our past ventured freely into my mind as I blocked out all the rest. Back to a time when Florence was a single person, not in control of an army. A night when Chad truly became mine to hold.

“You once told me we could run away from all this,” I murmured, lost in the memory I would cherish forever. “You said you would abandon the war and leave everyone behind with it if I asked you to. So tell me,” I said, making way slowly to where he stood. A suggestive smile tempted my lips, one that only my dissociation from reality could produce. “Is that offer still on the table?”

For a moment, his eyes nearly glazed over as he stared right through me, and my breath caught as I realised part of him was considering my ridiculous request. How small or large a part, I didn’t want to know. But then his eyes refocused to travel down
